Baton Rouge is where half of my family resides, and it is a wealth of inspiration for HtbE. In fact, it was the very sign in front of Southside Produce which inspired this blog!

My favorite is the tomato, carrying the “Follow Me” banner and cheerfully leading his vegetable compatriots to their future home within our stomachs.

What’s better about this version is the look in their eyes — slightly more-distant, as if they were hypnotized into membership within this suicidal salad cult.

A classic HtbE package, whose general feel is what inspired this blog. For some reason, pigs make the best advocates for their own consumption — is it because they’re so closely related to us humans? Or is it because they can pull of a bowtie better than any human weatherman could?

Part of the New Wave of HtbE, this recent Hostess package is going out of its way to sway kids towards a lifestyle of pastry destruction with little to no second thought that the life they are destroying is deliriously happy to be eaten. Although if I had a head of hair like Sir Cupcake here, I might be beaming also!

Also discovered at the same supermarket chain where the Cajun King made his first appearance. I suppose that this meaty venture is what Vince was concentrating on while benched in early 2009.

I’m still trying to ponder what was going through the butcher’s mind when he decided to decorate the seafood cabinet with this masterpiece. I suppose it worked — it got my attention and made me look. Although, it’s subsequently haunted my dreams.

Occasionally the search for happy leads to horrified — images where the cartoon animal/vegetable/mineral appears all too aware of their impending doom. Although we don’t find too many of these, we did want to share them as part of a new category called “horrified“.

Over the next couple weeks, we’ll publish some of our finds. If you’ve got any horrified pictures to submit, please let us know! Also let us know how they tasted — mmm!

Nirula’s New York Style Hot Dogs, Noida, India

Taken at the Noida Marketplace. Although technically not happy to be eaten — the hot dog itself must be the animated entity, not the lion itself — I thought it was amusing how this type of advertising translated to halfway around the world. Apparently hot dogs might be the next big thing in India, according to this article.

Mellow Mushroom, Raleigh, NC

Mellow Mushroom is an east coast chain based in Atlanta, GA. This delicious fungus has spread as far west as Mississippi and north as North Carolina, which is where I stumbled upon it.

The sign says their pizzas have been “Baked on the Stone Since 1974″, but I’ve found you only need to bake them 20 minutes — anything after that is overkill.
